There is a memory I recall frequently to help me feel better about myself, my peers, and people in general. It has to do with musical taste, which can often elicit criticism if one person’s opinion is not in tune with another’s. Not in this instance. A co-worker was asking everyone in the office to share their musical recommendations or favorite band. No matter what answer they gave, he would reply with a positive comment about their choice. It was unexpected and appreciated, especially for someone with my admittedly limited musical taste.
I first started thinking about All Nerds Allowed around five years ago, but did not really know what it was going to be. I’ve always been a nerd about things like Star Trek and video games, but that doesn’t make a website. I put the idea on hold when my wife and I decided to become parents. Upon bringing our son home, it became increasingly clear that our house was in need of significant baby-proofing. One of the biggest trouble areas was our office. Baby-strangling wires hung beneath both of our desks, and alluring power outlets sat right at his eye level. That is when I proposed the idea of making my own custom desk that would enclose all the cords and outlets.
I had no idea how to build a desk, let alone design one. I relied on Youtube and other online communities for help. Those communities and their creators welcomed me with open arms, and learning the required skills in that environment made me feel good. You can find pictures and insight into the process here. After months of cutting, sanding, and building, the desk was complete. I felt great about myself afterward, and in that moment I knew what All Nerds Allowed had to be about.
This site is about promoting positivity and inclusiveness with creativity. Whether it’s creating art, learning how to make a website, or fostering good feelings in others, you can be a nerd about so many things. There are Lego nerds, woodworking nerds, wrestling nerds, and so much more. I may not be interested in all of the categories myself, but that doesn’t matter. It’s not about me. It’s about you.
If you are a nerd about something, you should know you are welcome here.
